Extremely rare Americana: A cloth ribbon, “Envoys to the Congress on Behalf of Shabbos”. New York 1942.

Cloth ribbon made by Karl & Sons, Inc. (New York), which adorned the chests of the deputies who came to attend the congress on behalf of the Sabbath, organized by the Mizrahi movement. In the center of the ribbon is an early symbol of the Mizrahi movement, with the letter “mem” in the center and the inscription “Torah v’Eretz Yisrael”, written in Hebrew and English with the date of the committee which took place in the Pennsylvania Hotel in New York, 21-22 of Shvat, 1942 (8-9 February). Delegates were mainly rabbis and public figures.

13x4cm. Stains and wear at the edges.

The Congress for the Sabbath took place at the initiative of the Histadrut HaMizrahi in the United States, with the participation of the rabbinical associations and other organizations. The congress raised the issue of the importance and value of keeping the Sabbath in a country where, at the time, multitudes of Jews desecrated it in order to earn larger livings.
