Ellsworth Kelly Derrière Le Miroir No. 110 (page
An original lithograph on smooth wove paper by American artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015) "DerrieÌ€re Le Miroir No. 110 (page 10, 11)', 1958. With centerfold as issued. Made for Kelly's first-ever collaboration with Derriere Le Miroir No. 110 in October - November 1958. This print is based on the painting "Cowboy", 1958 (EK No.145; Goossen 1973,86) and derived from the two collages and ink drawing of 1958 (EK No.58.42-44). Published in conjunction with his first one-man show at Galerie Maeght, Paris. Published by Maeght Editeur, Paris, in the Editions Pierre a Feu, the issue is unsigned and unnumbered. The installment of Derriere le Miroir effectively represents Kelly's first color printmaking activity and reflects a return to color in the artist's paintings of late 1958 - 1959, after a period of predominantly black and white work. The imagery Kelly provided for the issue relates to the geometric and organic figure-ground paintings of 1954-58. Reference: "The Prints of Ellsworth Kelly: A Catalogue Raisonne: (Axsom I.a, page 176). Sheet size: 15" x 22.25". Light crease to the upper left and right corners. In otherwise excellent condition. In October 1945, the French art dealer AimeÌ Maeght opens his art gallery at 13 Rue de TeÌheÌran in Paris. His beginning coincides with the end of the Second World War and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France. The magazine Derriere Le Miroir was created in October 1946 and published without interruption until 1982. Maeght's ambition in establishing his print shop and his publication magazine Derriere Le Miroir was to make available to a broader audience less expensive printed imagery by the artists of his time, many of whom were represented by his Paris gallery. Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) were famous at the time. The magazine covered only the artists exhibited by Maeght gallery either through personal or group exhibitions. Among them are (in alphabetical order): Henri-Georges Adam, Pierre Alechinsky, Bacon, Jean Bazaine, Georges Braque, Pol Bury, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Roger Chastel, Eduardo Chillida, Alberto Giacometti, Vassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand LeÌger, Lindner, Henri Matisse, Joan MiroÌ, Jacques Monory, Pablo Palazuelo, Paul Rebeyrolle, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Saul Steinberg, Pierre Tal-Coat, Antoni Tapies, Raoul Ubac, Bram van Velde.Ellsworth Kelly (May 31, 1923 – December 27, 2015) was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker associated with hard-edge painting, Color Field painting, and minimalism. His works demonstrate unassuming techniques emphasizing simplicity of form, similar to the work of John McLaughlin and Kenneth Noland. Kelly often employed bright colors. He lived and worked in Spencertown, New York. Please check out Lot #'s 0482 & 0483 The Callcott and the Shayer original art, These are important original antique paintings .
