"Our Lady of the Annunciation". Carved and polychromed wooden sculpture. Castilian School. Late Romanesque. Late 13th century.
Magnificent sculpture on which the original polychroming is preserved.
The Virgin Mary, Queen and future mother, is presented to us in a frontal position.
She gives blessing with her right hand while holding the Holy Scriptures in her left.
She wears luxurious clothing consisting of a light-toned, fitted tunic which is cinched at the waist with designs of black crosses and red dots on the collar which look like embroidery.
She wears a white cloak on top which is decorated with red and blue flowers and a red and black border, it is held in place by her crown and falls to her feet.
The interior of the cloak can be seen, as Mary gathers it up in her left hand, so we can see the different decoration inside, with trimming made up of blue triangles edged in red.
There are long locks of hair at both sides of her face, which is given the effect of being wavy by the polychroming rather than the carving.
76 x 27 x 26 cm.
