Since ancient times the art of adorning horses’ harnesses has been a tradition, through which the wealth and importance of the rider can be shown. Fleuron shaped decorative pendants were the most outstanding elements. In this case the horse brasses are in excellent condition and of large dimensions.
Outstanding collections of horse brasses can be found, amongst other places, in:
- The National Archaeological Museum, Madrid, composed of more than a hundred examples, from the 11th century until the 15th century, most of which came from the José María Gudiol Ricart collection, acquired by the state in 1932.
- The Don Juan Institute, Valencia.
- The Metropoliatn Museum in New York
- The British Museum in London.
