Important letter from the rabbis of the Beit Medrash L'Torah in Chicago. Refers to Hitler and the Nazis. Elul, [1942]. Rare
[2] leaves printed by stencil, 28x21 cm.
Letter for students. Written on the letterhead of the Beit HaMedrash L'Torah in Chicago [Hebrew Theological College], prior to Rosh Hashana, dated: 27th of Elul, 1942. Signed in print by the three administrators of the institution: Rabbi Shaul Silber - president; Rabbi Yaakov Greenberg - principal; and Rabbi Shmuel Segal - head secretary.
The letter addressess "our disciples and friends in every location." The letter was written to help prepare the students for Rosh Hashana, in wake of the terrible rumors that they heard about Euope burning during the Holocaust. "We are now standing on erev Rosh Hashana...with bowed heads and pain upon the opening of the terrible grave for tens of thousands of our brethren..." His words also relate to Hiter and the Nazis: "The Nazi ideals...to rule the whole world..Hitler is right that we are his true enemies. Judaism is the death potion for Nazism. We were its enemy, and we are the enemy of the viewpoint of physicality in this world..." He contrasts this to the true, lofty ideas of Judaism: "At this time we must lift ourselves above the difficulties of the time and look towards eternal life. We will pray for this eternal life...the entire humanity stands in contrast to the Nazis, embedded with the ideals of Judaism of freedom and equality, and fights without all its power..."
