CLAXTON WILLIAM: (1899-1967) Canadian flying ace of World War I, credited with 37 victories. D.S., W. G. Claxton, in bold pencil, one page, 4to, n.p., 10th August 1918. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a Combat Report (headed Combats in the Air) relating to Claxton's aerial victory involving the destruction of a Fokker biplane over Fricourt, in northern France, whilst with 41 Squadron, the narrative stating, in part, 'Whilst on Offensive Patrol at 8-15pm I saw 5 E[nemy] A[ircraft], Fokker biplanes…..Capts. McCall and Hemming and myself dived on them. I fired at 2 E.A. without result, I then attacked a third E.A. firing about 15 rounds. E.A. dived vertically and crashed…..' Countersigned at the foot by Geoffrey Bowman (1891-1970) British fighter ace of World War I, credited with 32 victories. Bowman has signed his name in ink in his capacity as Commander of 41 Squadron. Three file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signatures. VG The document relates to Claxton's 34th aerial victory.
