BULLER REDVERS: (1839-1908) British General, Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in South Africa 1899-1900 at the beginning of the Second Boer War. Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Inhlobana on 28th March 1879 during the Battle of Hlobane in the Anglo-Zulu War. A.L.S., Redvers Buller, three pages, 8vo, Downes, Crediton, Devonshire, 12th March 1903, to H. N. Flewher (?). Buller expresses his regret that his correspondent had to go to the trouble of writing twice, explaining 'but I was very fully occupied when I received your first letter, & put it on one side & forgot it', further adding 'I think it most unlikely that I shall be able to get to Wolverhampton in November and I am very unwilling to pledge myself to do so. While therefore thanking your Committee for the honour done to me by their offer, I must ask them to allow me to decline it.' Four very small, minor traces of former mounting to the verso, VG
