At the age of 19 he moved to Madrid to study architecture at university. He then attended the private art academy “Círculo de Bellas Artes” and moved to Paris in 1948, where he started working with iron. Three years later he moved back to his home country and soon established himself as an internationally renowned sculptor and graphic artist. He regularly took part in international exhibitions, including the prestigious ‘documenta’ in Kassel. Chillida’s sculptural and graphic output is especially focused on ideas of space and its limits. The artist was repeatedly honored; in 1958, for instance, Chillida received the Grand Prix of sculpture at the Venice Biennale. The Guggenheim in New York held a ground-breaking retrospective already in the artist’s lifetime. (cbo)
