A POLYCHROME PORCELAIN CONTAINER AND LID SHAPED AS THE 'BOAT OF TREASURES'
Japan, Meiji period
The hull modeled like a shell with the attributes of the 'Seven Gods of Fortune', the decoration applied with polychrome enamels.
19 x 25 x 15 cm
Provenance: Italian private collection.
The 'Boat of Treasures' (Takarabune) is the boat on which the 'Seven Gods of Fortune' (Shichifukujin), a very popular group of deities since the Edo period, moved by sea. The arrival of the Takarabune on the beach was one of the events celebrated during the New Year.
