Letter regarding Hekdesh [property reserved for charitable purposes], signed by the chief religious court judges of Jerusalem, 5706/1946
A document appointing guardians for the Hekdesh in the Beit Yaakov neighborhood of Jerusalem, dated 16 Av 5706. The appointed guardians are some of Jerusalem's great rabbis and public figures, and the Hekdesh is the Mikveh structure in the neighborhood, "vitally necessary for family purity."
The document is signed by the greatest rabbinical judges of Jerusalem: Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank (1873-1961), head of the Ashkenazi Prushim religious court in Jerusalem; Rabbi Ya'akov Kelms (1880-1953, former Chief Rabbi of Moscow); and Rabbi Hezekiah Shabtai (1862-1955), head of the Sephardi rabbinical court in Jerusalem.
Beit Yaakov was one of the first Jerusalem neighborhoods outside the walls. It served as the city entrance in those days, and the automobiles traveling to Jaffa parked there. Many stories have been told in connection with the history of the neighborhood and its majestic figures. In the center of the neighborhood stands the ancient synagogue ‘Beit Yehudah,’ next to which is the Mikveh referred to in this document.
Very good condition. Filing holes. A short note (from that period) on the document.
The purchaser of this item will receive a research booklet about the neighborhood.
