Chovot Ha'Levavot by Rabbi Bahya ibn Paquda, with a Yiddish commentary entitled 'Or LaYesharim' by Rabbi Refael Firshtentel, Bratislava 1835.
A special copy from the library of Rabbi Simcha Bunim Sofer, rabbinical judge in Pressburg, author of 'Shevet Sofer'.
The book had belonged to the holy tzaddik Rabbi Elazar Katz Erentroi, one of the leaders of the Pressburg community. Was one of the heads of the 'Mehadrei Ha'Talmud' Company in Pressburg and preacher in the 'Poel Tzedek' Association. An answer to him was printed in Responsa Nachalat Azriel by Rabbi Azriel Rosenbaum.
His Hebrew and English signatures appear at the beginning of the book, as well as a sentence in his handwriting: "Bought with the inheritance of Rabbi… in 5622 (1862)".
In his old age, after 1935, Rabbi Erentroi decided to immigrate to the Holy Land and dedicate his days to the study of the Torah. Before his immigration, he gave the book as a farewell present to the Rabbi of Pressburg, Rabbi Shimcha Bunim Sofer.
Rabbi Simcha Bunim Sofer (5603-5667,1843-1907), the son of Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, the author of 'Ketav Sofer'. He succeeded his father in 1872 as Rabbi of Pressburg and head of Pressburg Yeshiva. Was one of the greatest rabbis of his generation and the leader of the Haredi community in Hungary. Most of Hungary's rabbis at the time were his disciples. Among his compositions: 'Shevet Sofer' Responsa on the Shulchan Aruch, 'Shevet Sofer' on the Talmud and 'Sha'arei Simcha' on the Torah. He served in the rabbinate of Pressburg until his death.
"As a token of my love and affection, I give this book of Chovat Ha'Levavot as a present to the rabbinical judge of the holy community of Pressburg on my leaving to the Holy City of Jerusalem … Elazar Katz… Erentroi".
