Important Essays Handwritten by the Geniuses of Jerusalem, Rabbi Beinush Salant among Them - Protest against Rabbi Shimon Deutsch, the Disciple of the "Chatam Sofer" and Head of the Ungarin Kollel - the Etrogim Polemic - 1876 - Historical Discovery!
Important essays handwritten by the rabbis of Jerusalem about the well-known polemic regarding the Kashrut of the Etrogim of the Land of Israel. The essays express an unprecedented protest against Rabbi Shimon Deutsch (1814-1878), the leader of the disciples of th e"Chatam Sofer" who immigrated to the Land of Israel and the founder of the Ungarin Kollel, who doubted the Kashrut of the Etrogim of the Land of Israel. The essays were prepared for printing; however, they have never been printed!

The essay by Rabbi Shimon Deutsch
In 1875 began a heated debate regarding the Kashrut of the Etrogim of the Land of Israel. Articles were published in the contemporary press. A year later, in the summer of 1876, it seemed that the controversy had calmed down. But then, the Jerusalem newspaper "Chavatzelet" published an upsetting letter by Rabbi Shimon Deutsch titled "Kol Koreh" (Chavatzelet, Friday, August 11 1876) which rekindled the controversy. In his article, Rabbi Deutsch wrote that the Etrogim of the Land of Israel could not be used for blessing and must not be sold. He signed his article: "Shimon Deutsch, the disciple of the Genius Rabbi Moshe Sofer Av Beit Din and Ram of Pressburg".

The letters before us
Before us are essays by the rabbis of Jerusalem, which strongly protest against Rabbi Deutsch's article. It is most likely that these letters were supposed to be printed. However, eventually, they were not! The branched research literature about the Etrogim polemic did not know of the response of the rabbis of Jerusalem to Rabbi Deutsch's article.
