BUDDHIST GUANYIN GODDESS CARVED WOOD SCULPTURE
A wood sculpture of Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion. She is the East Asian equivalent of Avalokitesvara and was adopted by other Eastern religions including Chinese folk religion. She was first given the appellation of the goddess of mercy or the mercy goddess by Jesuit missionaries in China. Hand-carved from a long and graceful solid chunk of wood.
