Rare: Sefer Pischei Teshuva Vol. I - Fundamental Commentary to Shulchan Aruch, Vilna 1836. First Edition.

Presented here is a complete copy of the Pischei Teshuva commentary to Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De’ah. First edition, as printed in Vilna in 1836. Authored by R. Avraham Zvi Eisenstadt (1812-1868) at a young age, and was met with high acclaim amongst leading Torah scholars. Ever since its release, it has been an immensely popular work, and was ultimately incorporated as a standard commentary in all editions of the Shulchan Aruch. Of all Halachik works published in the 19th century, Pischei Teshuvah is the only work that merited such widespread use. (Mishnah Berurah and Aruch HaShulchan have too become standard, although not actually printed with the standard editions of the Shulchan Aruch).

This first edition was subject to great controversy. Due of the sheer demand for this work, copies of this edition were quickly sold out. In 1852, the printers of Lemberg-Lviv reprinted the author’s work without his consent, causing him tremendous financial loss. He penned a letter to R. Yosef Shaul Nathanson, author of 'Shoel U'Meishiv' and Rabbi of Lviv, asking him to intervene on his behalf. He writes that many have advised him to sue the printers and bring them to court, but he doesn't feel that bringing a fellow Jew to court is proper (Raboseinu SheBagolah, Vol. II pp. 247). Interestingly, this controversy and the various claims involved is discussed at length in Sho’el U’Meishiv (Mahadurah Kamma, Simman 44).

Rare. A complete copy of this work in a condition such as this is highly uncommon. We can assume that most copies did not remain intact due to heavy wear and use.

In good-very good condition. Bound in original binding. Small wormholes seen on several leaves, not affecting text.

[4], 190 pp. Volume I only.

Stefansky Hebrew Classics 192.
