“I, Shlomo Moussaieff… have travelled from Jerusalem to Bukharia three times [for which] I must thank God… If the Temple were to have still been standing I would bring a thanksgiving offering … instead I have published this Siddur” (Preface).
Born in the city of Bukhara, Shlomo Moussaieff (1852-1922) was a learned Rabbi, as well as a merchant engaged the tea trade, banking and real estate. Motivated by religious conviction, he relocated to the Land of Israel in 1893 and was the founder of the Bukharian Quarter of Jerusalem. Today the territory of the defunct Bukharian emirate lies mostly in Uzbekistan, with portions in Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.
