The Captivity Symphony, a collection of drawings of a Jewish officer in the British army who had fallen captive by the Germans, Haifa, 1947
The Captivity Symphony – the drawings of Shimon HaCohen, a Hebrew officer in captive. The book, which was published by the author, gathers 96 drawings from the time he had been captive during World War II.
On 29.4.1941, soldiers of the British expeditionary force surrendered to the German army and were taken captive. From about 9,000 soldiers that had been captured, 1,383 were Jewish volunteers from the Yishuv. The author, who drew the pictures, was one of the three Hebrew officers who were captured during the Italy-Greece battle. Amazingly, he and his friends were held in a special prison for British officers and were not executed despite being Jewish.
"In the emptiness of his captivity, a passion and ability to express himself in drawing was surprisingly revealed … this creation strengthens within us the faith in the Hebrew man's liveliness and sensitivity" (from the writing on the cover of the book).
