Jerusalem YMCA "Life Member" metal plaque issued to Humphrey Ernest Bowman, 28 Nov. 1936; 73 x 50.5mm, 41.4g. Bowman (1879-1965) was Director of Education in Colonial Service; dir. of Mandatory Dept. of Education, 1920-36; at Ministry of Information, 1939; special duty w/Foreign Office, 1941-45; donated "Bowman Collection" to Oxford. He saw foreign language cultures as potential political threat to local vernaculars; promoted doctrine of education along native language usage (i.e. Jews to learn Hebrew, Arabs to learn Arabic & not v/v) & steered away from reference to English/literature in foreign education, shunned missionary & private schools. This YMCA honor probably bestowed upon Bowman's retirement that year.
