View of Chioggia depicts a small port close to Venice. It is an outstanding example of the artist’s colouristic strength and his post-impressionist style. Bright warm and light colours of this painting transcend joyful atmosphere and harmony. Interest in plain air and aesthetics distinguish Gorbatov’s pain- tings. He visited Italy for the first time in 1912, and in 1922 with his wife, the artist emigrated from Russia and stayed in Italy for few years before settling in Berlin. Even in the subsequent years the artist frequently travelled to Italy until Nazis came to power in Germany. Gorbatov created a series of beautiful views of Chioggia, Capri and Venice throughout the 1920s and early 1930s.
