(Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers / translated from ancient Greek to Latin by Thomas Aldobrandini).
Parchment binding of XVII century, containing traces of colour and gold-tooled armorial
bearings on a front cover. Headpiece and initials are engraved on wood. Valsov’s ex libris with his motto on flyleaf. Books from Vlasov’s Library are very rare.
Provenance:
VLASOV Alexandre Sergeevitch (1777-1825). Chamberlain, bibliophile, collector of paintings, graphics and works of applied arts.
Vlasov entrenched a passion for collecting after meeting Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Beloselsky-Belozersky, the famous diplomat and art collector (Vlasov was married to his daughter Mary). The rich dowry of his wife allowed Vlasov to leave the service, move to Moscow and devote himself to collecting. The foreign auctions became the most impor- tant source for a constant replenishment of his collection. The Parisian antique dealers wrote in their catalogues that the Vlasov’s Library is a collection of the rarest books.
After his death, the library was partly sold and taken abroad by his widow.
