Letter by R. Yitzchak Isaac Herzog, Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel. 1948.
The letter is written on his letterhead as Chief Rabbi of Israel in Sivan 1948, a month after the establishment of the State. In it, Rabbi Herzog requests from the treasurer of the Keren Hachzakat Torah to support a certain rabbi who is “very great in Torah and a noble spirit in every way,” adding that R. Isser Zalman Meltzer was in full agreement with him in this matter.
R. Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog was born in Lomza in 1889, and as a child moved with his parents to England. He was originally Chief Rabbi of Ireland, and from 1937, served as Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel, and later, of the State of Israel. He was very active in the rescue of Jewish survivors in Europe, particularly, of the yeshiva students. He passed away in 1959. In good condition, with looseleaf holes in the margins.
