Proclamation Calling for a Gathering Following the Execution by Hanging and the Murder of the Twelve Jewish "Spies" in Baghdad 1969

Proclamation by the rabbis of immigrants from Iraq in Jerusalem for a prayer rally on the seventh day after the execution of the twelve Jews suspected of spying for Israel January 27 1969.

Among the inspirational words of the rabbis: "We are shocked and despondent from the terrible and evil report coming from the Iraqi exile regarding the execution of poor innocent souls, with no injustice on their hands, in a disgraceful and revolting manner, openly, in broad daylight, before all the nations of the world who are quiet and unconcerned about the murder of members of the Jewish people in any place with innocent blood publicly spilled like water and with this all the nations are silent partners to the revolting crime which recalls ... their silent cooperation with the murder of our people in the days of the terrible Holocaust by the famous enemy, may his name be blotted out ..." The rabbis call for a prayer rally on the seventh day after their murder, the 14th of Shevat in the Great Synagogue of Machane Yehudah in the Machane Yehudah neighborhood in Jerusalem where rabbis from Iraq will speak.

'The Hangings in Baghdad' was an event involving 14 executions of Iraqi citizens accused of spying for Israel in 1969. There were 9 Jews among them. Between the years 1948-1969 the Jewish community of Baghdad shrank from 130,000 to less than 3000 following massive immigration to Israel and persecution by the authorities. As a result of the grating loss by the Arab states in the Six Day War, they increased hostilities against the Jews of Iraq with various restrictions. In July 1968, the Ba'ath party took leadership after a coup. In December 1968, the IDF attacked an Iraqi military position in the north of Jordan, and in response, Iraqi authorities started to pursue Israeli and American "spies." In the wave of arrests, 12 Jews from Baghdad and Basra were incarcerated. Their hanging upon the spying charge was set for the 27th of January. Leading up to their execution, Radio Baghdad called out to citizens to come out and view [the execution] in Liberation Square in Baghdad, an event attended by hundreds of thousands of people [this is the event intended in the proclamation by the words: "openly, in broad daylight and before all the nations of the world"]. 9 of those hanged were Jews, and the other three Jews who were arrested were executed on August 26th 1969. This event and the general hostility of Iraqi authorities caused most of Iraqi Jewry to leave the country and immigrate to Israel in the early '70's.
