Machzor for the Prayer Leader according to the Custom of Rome – Vowelized Script – with Kavanot Ha'Ari – Carmagnola 1835-1837 – Written by a Member of a Family of Kabbalists, Disciples of the Ari – a Large, Impressive Volume
Machzor for the prayer leader for Rosh Ha'Shana and Yom Kippur, handwritten in nice Italian script. Vowelized. Written during the years 1835-1837 in Carmagnola, Italy.
The custom of Rome and their version of the prayer is unique, not Ashkenazic and not Sephardic. The customs and versions of Rome are among the most ancient ones and their source is the customs of the Land of Israel, from the Jews were exiled to Rome after the failure of the rebellion against the Romans. Many of the Piyyutim that have survived only in this version of Rome are Piyyutim from the Land of Israel.
One of the customs that are unique to the Machzor of the Italian Jews is the custom to say "Kol Nidrei" in Hebrew. This too might be an influence of the custom of the Land of Israel. In the Machzor before us, we find this prayer in Hebrew.
Like large Machzorim intended for prayer leaders, we find an echo of special customs in the instructions for the prayer leader. Thus, for example, in the Machzor before us the prayer leader is instructed "to blow the Shofar before the Torah ark".
The Machzor indicates the influence of the disciples of the Ari and the Italian Kabbalists. The order of blowing the Shofar is accompanied by Kabbalistic Kavanot by the Ari. The Colophon indicates that the writer of the Machzor was a member of an Italian family of Kabbalists.
Th e"Ne'ilah" prayer has a special illustrated title page.
Condition: Good-Fair. Original, decorated leather binding with slight flaws in the margins. Time stains and natural wear. One leaf is detached and several leaves are loose.
