A religious manuscript with novellae on the Menachot tractate, handwritten by Rabbi Yehoshua Lang. The early 1840's.
Before us is part of his long composition on the tractates of the Talmud, of which during his lifetime, only part was printed. The novellae before us on the Menachot tractate was never printed. An important religious discovery!
Two large leaves, written on both their sides in tiny, dense script. Approximately eighty(!) lines on each page, forty words per line.
Indeed, the author's name is not written on the manuscript. However, he writes: "And I have already written part of this in my book CH"K (Leaf no. 24 second page, line eleven from the bottom). Our examination has revealed that he is referring to his book 'Chibat Ha'Kodesh".
The leaves are numbered: 21, 24. It is most likely that they are remnants of a larger composition on the Menachot tractate.
The author: Rabbi Yehoshua Lang (1844-1908), one of the geniuses of his times. He was the rabbi of several cities of Poland. His opinion was requested on public Halachic matters of great importance. A responsum by him on the matter of Heiter Mechira during the Shmita was printed in the "Chikrei Halacha" Responsa by Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever.
His composition 'Binyan Yehoshua' was printed as a booklet of novellae and glosses which was attached to the edition of Ha'Yad Ha'Chazaka that was prublishe din Vilnius in 1900. Ever since, it is printed in all editions of Mishneh Torah.
The following sections of his long composition on the tractates of the Talmud were printed during his lifetime:
'Anaf Yehoshua' (Vilnius, 1863) on the Shabbat Tractate. 'Pri Yehoshua' (Vilnius, 1867) on the Pesachim tractate. 'Kerem Yehoshua' (Vilnius, 1876) on the Sanhedrin and Makot tractates. 'Chibat Ha'Kodesh' (Vilnius, 1888) on Seder Kodashim. This composition contains novellae on the Zevachim, Arachin, Temurah and Meilah tractates.
Before us is a handwritten completion of this composition with his novellae on the Menachot tractate, which has never been printed and is revealed here for the first time.
Size of page: 35cm.
Condition: Good. Slight wear, with damage to several words at the edge of one of the leaves. Folding marks.
