Handwritten Eulogy for the Rebbetzen Lipsha, the Wife of Rabbi Chaim Ha'Levi Soloveitchik of Brisk – Handwritten by the Rabbi who Eulogized Her During the Funeral – "Thanks to Her, We have Merited Such a Great Genius!" – the 1910's
A manuscript containing a eulogy for the Rebbetzen Mrs. Lipsha Soloveitchik, the wife of Rabbi Chaim Ha'levi Soloveitchik. Written in a notebook. A touching, important eulogy that has never been printed! The 1910's.
The Rebbetzen Lipsha was the daughter of Rabbi Raphael Shapira and the granddaughter of the Natziv of Volozhin. The mother of Rabbi Yitzchak Ze'ev of Brisk.
7 handwritten pages. We do not know the writer's identity; however, the wording of the eulogy and the format of the notebook indicate that this is most likely an autograph of one of the most prominent rabbis who eulogized the Rebbetzen during her funeral! This is indicated by the eloquent, fluent writing, with almost no corrections or erasures and the excitement and warmth of the eulogizer.
(Alternatively, it can be said that the eulogy was handwritten by one of the people who attended the funeral and wrote down the eulogy when he heard it. However, this option is less probable than the first.)
We failed to find information about the people who eulogized the Rebbetezn. Undoubtedly, when their identity will be discovered, so will the identity of the writer of the eulogy before us, who was most likely a prominent rabbis and a relative of the deceased.
The writer begins the eulogy with the following words: "Like the sound of thunder, the terrible news about the death of the honorable Rebbetzen, whom we now lead to her grave with great respect and with a great audience, had terrified us! … our lofty relative", which indicate that he was a relative of the Rebbetzen.
In his eulogy, the writer mentions the genealogy of the Rebbetzen as well as her wisdom and good advice. Then he cites the Sages who praise the wives of Torah Scholars who assist their husbands in their study and who educate their children. He asks: "… to be a rabbi in a city such as Brisk our city you need be a genius and you need the assistance of the wife … that she will not demand of her husband to support her and give her expensive clothes and why have we merited such a great genius, only thanks to the Rebbetzen who was a peerless elf-righteous woman!
17 cm.
