Collection of documents handwritten and signed by Rabbi Elyakim Getz Ha'Cohen Schwerin Av Beit Din of Baja, Hungary, a disciple of the Maharam Bennet. The late 1740's.
Four leaves written on both their sides (a total of eight pages), some handwritten by Rabbi Getz and some by a scribe. On each page, Rabbi Getz's signature, sometimes even twice. A total of 11 signatures!
The content of the documents: matters of the Baja community. Yiddish and Hebrew. Many additional signatures of the Gabaim of the community.
Rabbi Elyakim Getz Ha'Cohen Schwerin Av Beit Din of Baja, Hungary (1760-1852) was the Chief Rabbi of the Hungarian Jewish communities and had the authority to confirm the choice of rabbis of the country.
He was born in Schwerin and was the disciple of Rabbi Yosef of Posen, the son-in-law of the 'Noda Bi'Yehuda'. He studied in Pressburg with Rabbi Meir Berabi and in Nikolsburg with Rabbi Mordechai Bennet. He also studied with Rabbi Shmuel Sefal Landau, the son of the 'Noda Bi'Yehuda'. In 1815, he became Av Beit Din of Baja (replacing the Mahram Esh).
