Rabbi Yehoshua Zelig Tarshish (1862-1940) was well-known among the Lithuanian Jews as a pious and ascetic Tzaddik. His brother-in-law, the Alter of Novardok, chose him as the husband of his orphaned sister. In 1890, he was sent by Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor to establish a yeshiva in Berditchev. He immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1933.
