Historical Letter by Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Breuer Av beit Din of Frankfurt to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld – 1913 – An Extremely Rare Item
Letter by Rabbi Shlomo Zalma Breuer to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Frankfurt am Mein, 1913.
Letters by him are extremely rare, all the more so an important letter such as the one before us.
"This week I wrote a letter to the members of the temporary committee that I do not wish anymore to be a member with them, since I believe that in the country of Hungary there will be great danger to Judaism if the terms regarding the leadership of Agudat Yisrael are not accepted and confirmed and I have no doubt that his honor will agree with this…" His signature appears on the margins of the letter.
This letter is most significant since Rabbi Breuer himself was a member of the first Mo'etzet Gedolei Ha'Torah of Agudat Yisrael. In this letter there is a rare reference to the significant turning point in his life, when he left "Agudat Yisrael" due to his criticism of it.
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Breuer (1850-1926) was one of the leaders of the Orthodox Jews of Western Europe; he was the son-in-law and follower of the Rashar Hirsch. Since 1890, he replaced his father-in-law as the rabbi of Frankfurt am Mein.
