Rabbi Dr. Zvi Asaria (Helfgott) ( September 8, 1913 - May 22, 2002 ) was a member of the Yad Vashem Directorate, rabbi of Yugoslavia and Germany and the first rabbi of Savyon .

Azaria was born in Yugoslavia in the name of Hermann Helfgott , Kalman and Hannah Rachel Helfgott. He studied theology at Sarajevo and at the Rabbinical Seminary in Vienna . He also studied philosophy at the University of Vienna . In 1938, following the unification of Austria with Nazi Germany, he fled Vienna and continued his studies in Budapest . He was ordained as a rabbi and completed his doctorate in philosophy.


After completing his studies, he served as rabbi in Kehilla and Elyaki-Bachkrak, Yugoslavia . In World War II , served in the Yugoslav army, was captured by the German, and sat there for four years. Upon his release from captivity, in 1945, he reached Bergen-Belsen where he assisted Holocaust survivors. He was later appointed Chief Rabbi of the British Conquest in Germany and worked to recruit fighters for the Haganah from among the Holocaust survivors.


In 1948 he immigrated to Israel, worked at the Rotenberg House in Haifa and served in the IDF.  In the 1950s he was sent to Germany, where he was the rabbi of Cologne . He organized immigration and nurtured ties between Israel and Germany.


In 1961 he returned to Israel and began serving as a rabbi of Savyon. He worked to commemorate the Holocaust. He was one of the founders of the organization She'erit Hapleta, the chairman of the Yugoslav Fighters' Organization in Israel and a member of the Yad Vashem Council and administration.


Published a series of books dealing with the history of the Jewish people, during the Holocaust and in philosophy.

He died in 2002.
