During the Nazi invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, World War II began, and from that time the legal anti-Semitism of the Third Reich became a policy of mass extermination of Jews on the European continent and everywhere Hitler's troops arrived.
There were many acts of insurrection in both the ghettos and the partisan activity, but the hope of the Jewish people was a swift and total military defeat that the Allies would inflict on the German war machine. Indeed, the number of Jewish fighters in all Allied armies amounted to 1.5 million.
