RITUAL BAMBARA EIGHT-SPIRE MASK, 1900

Bambara masks receive offerings and sacrifices, and they are even solemnly buried following an appropriate rite when its role of intermediation has ended, and lost their sacred character. Of hollowed form, the pointed chin beneath the lenticular mouth and pointed nose, the eyes pierced through, decorated with seashells and corals; exceptionally fine.
