GORREQUER GIDEON: (1780-1841) Anglo-French Lieutenant Colonel. Best known for serving as the aide-de-camp to Hudson Lowe during the exile of Napoleon in St. Helena, and for the diary he kept while on the island. A.L.S., `G. Gorrequer«, one page, 8vo, 27th August 1819, to James Verling. Gorrequer requests additional information for his writings from his correspondent, and states `If you can find any information as to the hour at which Dr. Stokoe saw General Bonaparte on the first visit he paid him on 17th January 1819, be good enough to communicate it to me..« With blank integral leaf and remnants of former seal to the verso. Folded. About VG £600-900 James Roche Verling (1787-1858) British Army Surgeon who became personal surgeon to Napoleon Bonaparte on St Helena. Hudson Lowe (1769-1844) Anglo-Irish Officer and colonial Administrator. Best known for his time as Governor of St. Helena and jailer of Napoleon Bonaparte. John Stokoe (1775-1852) British Naval Surgeon who treated Napoleon whilst at St. Helena on five occasions between 17th & 21st January 1819. Incurring the displeasure of Hudson Lowe, the surgeon was placed on trial before a Court Martial and sentenced to be dismissed from the Navy.
