[PAUL I]: (1754-1801) Emperor of Russia 1796-1801. The only son of Peter III and Catherine the Great. Assassinated. A very interesting A.L., three pages, 4to, Berlin, 7th April 1801, to the priest of Franconville, convent of Franciscan in Vienna, in French. The letter is most probably written by a diplomat close to Bourbons, and refers to the recent assassination of the Emperor Paul I on 23rd March, only two weeks before the present letter was written. Bearing to the fourth page and beneath the addressee name a red wax seal in very fine condition with the initials V.C. The letter first instructs where to send from now on the letters which may have anything to do with the King, and states in part `..The death of the Emperor of Russia increases one more level the complicated situation of affairs. It is impossible to deal or negotiate anything before knowing the persons that the Emperor will appoint to his cabinet. I might be wrong but I am almost convinced that Count Panine will reappear once again...« further saying `..I am persuaded that the relationships with Vienna will be immediately reestablishedÉ The Russian influence still seemed to be fighting against the French greed, and I fear that a Prince wiser than his father although less redoubtable will be able to continue acting in the same way.. and the events are still playing in favour of French..« and before concluding he adds `..The last news from Russia were announcing a huge discontent of the Emperor towards the French behavior.. The whole would have ended with a rupture if the most unexpected death wouldn«t have saved once more Bonaparte.« Further referring to the King of France, the English in Denmark and other political matters. A letter of excellent content, bearing an attractive watermark. Very small area of paper loss to the last page, only very slightly affecting few words, as a result of the opening of the letter. Folded. G £250-350 Alexandre I (1777-1825) Emperor of Russia 1801-25, the first Russian King of Poland 1815-25. He succeeded his father Paul I to the throne.
