Book of daily prayers for every day of the year. According to the custom of the German and Polish Jews.
This was the very first Ashkenazi Siddur printed in America and was prepared for print by the famed Isaac Leeser. He writes in his introduction that the Hebrew text is based “chiefly after Rabbi Wolf Heidenheim celebrated “Sapho Berurah.” The English translation is based upon “our modern German translators, my own studies and…David Levi.
Although Leeser had virtually no rabbinic contemporaries in America with whom to confer, he nonetheless persevered in the task of preparing many important Hebrew texts for publication. This was in addition to the many other rabbinic duties he undertook in his noble mission to disseminate Torah true Judaism in unfamiliar and often hostile surroundings.
It is particularly rare to find this Siddur in such good condition.
Vinograd Philadelphia 18; Rosenbach 636; Singerman 1024; Goldman 37. C. Sherman press. [4], 243 pages. Fine condition (stains). Original binding, leather spine (worn).
