CHINA. Seemingly unrecorded Yiddish newspaper of the Jewish Community of Harbin. “Der Veiter Mizrach” 1922.

Heartrending newspaper, describing the plight of thousands of orphans who were in desperate need of assistance as a result of the terrible pogroms, which took place throughout Russia in the early 1920’s, in large part due to the fighting between the “White’s” and the “Red’s”. The newspaper details how many Jews were murdered in many cities and towns as well as the number of orphan survivors who were left without the proper care.
Shortly before World War I, a small Jewish community was established by Russian natives in the city of Harbin, China. Between the years 1917-1930 there were an estimated 15,000 Jews there. The main shul was headed by R. Aaron Moshe Kisilov (1866-1949), a pupil of the Gadol of Minsk and R. Chaim Soloveitchik, and author of the responsa Mishberei Yam. Following the Chinese conquest of the city from the Japanese, and the establishment of the communist rule, the Hebrew congregation in Harbin ceased to exist.
