Historical archive of the Jewish community of Pinsk, during the rabbinic tenure of R. Tzvi Hirsh Ha’Cohen Volk.
• Twenty one page document of the mechiras Chametz that took place in Pinsk before Pesach 1906. It includes hundreds of signatures of the Jews of Pinsk including a few signatures of the Rov, R. Tzvi Hirsch Volk. The pages of hundreds of signatories have not been studied in depth.
• Four page document (dated 1906) written upon the untimely passing of the Rov, R. Tzvi Hirsch Volk. Signed by over 100 members of the community, establishing a committee to ensure the financial stability of the late Rov’s family.
R. Tzvi Hirsch Ha’Cohen Volk (1856-1906), was a Talmid of the Beis HaLevy in Slutzk and was renowned as a tremendous Talmid Chochom. He was the son in law R. Mordechai Gimpel Yaffe. He served in as Rov in various communities, including Plotzk. In 1895 he succeeded R. Eliezer Moshe Horowitz as Rav of Pinsk, where he served until his passing at the young age of 51. Author of Kesser Kehunah on the Sifri, and on Shulchon Oruch.
The Jewish community of Pinsk was one of the most prestigious and important Kehillos in Lithuania, particularly known for its scholarship. In addition to the “Ltivishe” there were also a large number of Chasidim, mostly affiliated to Stolin which is in the environs of Pinsk.
