With extensive marginalia by Rabbi Yoel Leib HaLevi Herzog (1865-1934), these books were used in 1969 by Yad HaRav Herzog to publish the book Gilyonei Yoel (including proofs, references and notes to places to the Bavli and Yerushalmi Talmud).


Rabbi Yoel Leib HaLevi Herzog was a Rabbi in Poland, in the United Kingdom and France.
He was the father of Israel's First Chief Rabbi Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog (1888-1959), The grandfather of Chaim Herzog the 6th President of Israel and the great grandfather of Issac Herzog Israel's current leader of Opposition.
He was born in Lomza to Rabbi Naftali Hertz Sarah Herzog and his mother Bluma.
Was a student of Rabbi Noach Isaac Diskin.
He married Miriam, the daughter of Rabbi Aryeh Leibo.
After his marriage, he served as Rabbi of Lomza and was known as a preacher.
In 1890 he published his essay - Hasavlani, on the Book of Ruth.
In 1897 he emigrated with his family to Britain, where he served as Rabbi of the city of Leeds.
In 1902 he published his book - Teshuva Halacha.
On the eve of the First World War he moved with his family to Paris,and was appointed to serve as Rabbi of the Synagogue Association of communities of immigrants from Russia and Poland.
Since the beginning of the 1920s he started publishing a series of books in Paris - Imrei Yoel.
Apart from interpretations it contains many sermons to his congregation.
Died in 1934, his coffin was sent to Israel and he was buried at the Mount of Olives.
