'To proclaim a prohibition against learning external subjects, even those permitted by (Jewish) law ... we from the Ashkenazic communities, together in the holy city of Jerusalem, accept upon ourselves anew the decrees of complete severe excommunication, and with the power of the holy Torah, we hereby strengthen and establish these strictures upon all residents of the holy city of Jerusalem, the Ashkenazim.' Jerusalem, 1878.

Early proclamation (1878) by the rabbis and Admors of Jerusalem against external studies. Signed by Elazar Menachem Biderman (Lelov), Rabbi Moshe Yehoshua Leib - Av Beit Din of Brisk. Yaakov Yehudah Lowy, Yaakov son of Rabbi Moshe, Mordechai son of Aryeh Leib, Avraham Alter of Kishinev, and more.

Description: 30x49 cm.

Condition: Poor-moderate condition. The leaf is split in half in its middle. Tears with damage to isolated letters.

Rare! There are almost no proclamations left from Jerusalem during those years.
