Aldgate Ward with its Divisions into Precincts & Parishes According to a New Survey. Includes the Jewish Synagogue. 1756
Map of the Aldgate neighborhood in London, including the Jewish synagogue. 1756.
This map was published in the History of London from Its Foundation to the Present Time. The plans are dedicated to council member, Robert Scott. The bottom corners feature sketches of two neighborhood buildings.
The map marks the location of the Jewish synagogue. This synagogue was the first built in England after the expulsion of the Jews in 1290 and their return in 1655. The synagogue was established c. 1690, and was then moved to a new building in 1722. It was rebuilt about 70 years later and known as the "Great Synagogue." For hundreds of years, it served as the spiritual center of the Ashkenazic Jewish community of London, until its destruction in the Second World War during the German "Blitz" of London on 10.05.1941.
Fine condition.
