Important Halachic Responsa Handwritten by the Author of 'Levushei Mordechai" Rabbi Mordechai Leib Winkler, the Rabbi of Mád and Head of Its Yeshiva and One of the Leading Poskim of Hungary – 1921 – have Never been Printed
Important halachic responsa handwritten and signed by Rabbi Mordechai Leib Winkler, the author of 'Levushei Mordechai', Av Beit Din of Mád. [1921]. Sent to the Rabbi Yisrael Weltz, the rabbi of Budapest, who had sent the questions to Rabbi Winkler.
The content of the responsa:
A. Halachic definition of "Talmid Chacham" (Torah scholar) and who should adopt such a title.
B. The law of extracting semen in vain.
C. "About the light of electricity" – electric light – a very short responsum referring to his book, where he discussed the issue at length. To this day, the Poskim of our generation rely on his halachic ruling according to which the Mitzvah of lighting a Sabbath candle cannot be observed by switching on an electric light since there has to be some similarity to an oil or wax candle.
On the reverse side of the leaf, a handwritten inscription by Rabbi Weltz "Responsum from the genius Av Beit Din of Mád – which has not been printed yet")
It should be noted that this halachic letter has not been printed even in the new edition of the "Levushei Mordechai" responsa (New York, 2011), which did contain other responsa that was sent to Rabbi Weltz.
Rabbi Mordechai Leib Winkler, Av Beit Din of Mád, author of "Levushei Mordechai" (1845-1932), was a leading disciple of Rabbi Yitzchak Aharon Landsberg Av Beit Din of Grosswardein. Rabbi Winkler started teaching Torah in 1874 and since 1901 served as the rabbi of Mád for more than thirty years. He also headed the Yeshiva of Mád. He was recognized as one of the three leading rabbis of Hungary (together with Rabbi Yeshaya Zilberstein and Rabbi Shimon Greenfeld). With the printing of his responsa books, he became known all around the Jewish world as the leading Posek of the generation. His halachic responsa was accepted unchallenged and became a foundation stone in the responsa literature.
27.5cm. Written on one side of the leaf.
Condition: Fair. Large tears in the folds of the leaf and its margins (with no damage to text).
