Al Chomotayich Yerushalayim (On the Walls of Jerusalem) – a Rare Historical Booklet Published by the 'Haganah' Organization during the War of Independence – 1948 – "Our Country is Beautiful, We Shall Protect It"
Al Chomotayich Yerushalayim (On the Walls of Jerusalem), booklet which is small in size (15pp.) yet large in content. In contains a fascinating essay about the situation of the 1,700 Jewish residents of the Old City of Jerusalem, at their most difficult time. Written with intense emotion and pathos.
The booklet also describes the actions of the Haganah to protect the Jews of the city, the rule "Kill or be Killed" serving as the guiding principle of the haganah.
The fifth chapter of the booklet is the "Present Need" and at its end, it is written: "Do not talk about security matters on the street or in coffee shops. There are those who are interested in knowing when we come and go".
The sixth chapter: "When Heroes Die": "We stand to attention, and continue the campaign. The death of our 35 soldiers … is exceptional and unique since the days of the war of Bar Kokhba …"
At the end of the booklet, several pages of a journal of activities 1947-8, for the region of Jerusalem only.
At the beginning of the booklet, a poem by Uri Zvi Greenberg "Ha'Chaim Bizchutam Omrim".
On the back cover, a nice printed picture of an avenue of Jerusalem and under it the Hebrew inscription "Our Country is Beautiful, We Shall Protect It".
