[RED BARON]: An excellent and rare signed colour drawing by Lieutenant Captain Leigh Simpson, Pilot of the 3rd Squadron of the Australian Flying Corps during WWI. Awarded for bravery under fire with a Distinguished Flying Cross. The colour drawing shows an AR8 airplane firing the back of the Red Baron Fokker airplane. Signed by Simpson in pencil, adding `The End of the Red Baron´, also dated France 1918 in his hand. The page has been removed from an exceptional catalogued WWI aviation autograph album, and has been neatly affixed to a larger page. Folded. VG £600-900 On 21st April 1918 Manfred von Richthofen (1892-1918), the mythical Red Baron, considered the ace of aces fighter pilot, credited with 80 air combat victories, was shot down over Vaux-sur-Somme in France. Although there is still a debate regarding the circumstances of his death, it was the 3rd Squadron of the Australian Flying Corps, controlling the sector, the one that had few of their airplanes engaged that morning in flying fights against the German Fokker triplanes commanded by the Red Baron. Captain Leigh Simpson together with Banks were one of these Canadian pilots that morning who were attacked by the Jasta 11 squadron leaded by the Red Baron few minutes after 10h30.
