Dmitry Bobyshev's signature «Old Jack» and his appeal to Lyudmila Stern as a kind of «Sh.BM.B.» have an interesting background. Lyudmila Stern recalled: «In the early sixties, no one from our company went abroad. But after reading «foreign literature», we dreamed of escaping from the dull Soviet cell. We were «pushed» in the mysterious West, and America simply raved about American cinema, American jazz, American way of life (...) We wrote each other stylized letters to one of our favorite writers, and also invented game situations, imagining ourselves as their heroes . We also had fun with epistolary games. We «were carried» in the dusty expanses of Texas, in the Parisian salons, in the Norwegian fiords, on the Polynesian islands. I have a whole epistolary archive of that time, but for the publication of many letters, including Brodsky, the time will not come soon. »

Дмитрий Васильевич Бобышев (1936) — поэт, переводчик, литературовед. Писал стихи с середины 1950-х, публиковался в самиздате (в том числе в журнале «Синтаксис»). В 1960-е годы входил в круг так называемых «ахматовских сирот» (вместе с И. Бродским, Е. Рейном, А. Найманом).
