Ketubah Written in the Wasseralfingen DP Camp - She'erit HaPleitah

Ketubah for the marriage of Avraham son of Yechezkel and Chayah Hinda which took place in the Wasseralfingen DP Camp [Germany] on 18/6/1947.

After the Holocaust, the Allies established DP camps in the areas they governed in Germany, Austria and Italy. The first residents of the camps were those who survived the concentration camps who were liberated by the Allies on Geman soil. Conditions in these camps were very harsh, especially at their inception. Many of the DP camps had previously served as concentration camps or German army camps, so the the Holocaust survivors found themselves again behind barbed wire, suffering from lack of food, clothing and medicine. Despite this, the survivors in the DP camps maintained a full spiritual life. Most of the survivors lost their entire families, and with the feelings of loss and isolation, their desire to establish their own families strengthened. As such, after liberation, there was an immediate wave of marriages in the camps. Some of the camps held group marriage ceremonies, occasionally between survivors from different countries. Despite this, ketubahs which survived from the DP camps are rare and almost none were preserved.

Size: 21x30 cm. Filing perforations. Very fine condition.
