Letter by Rabbi Baruch Marcus, Elul 1919


Letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Baruch Marcus, addressed to Haifa Municipal Committee, Haifa, 1919.


In his letter, the rabbi apologizes for referring to the district governor, not in the Hebrew language, "I find it appropriate that I admit to your just demand on both sides. And I, like you, demand with all my heart and soul that the government recognize our language as one of the official languages ​​... ' But he explains that he was forced to address them in their own language because they do not transmit his messages written in Hebrew to the high echelons, A deficit that I have a clear answer to all my words.' On the margins of the letter is his signature and personal stamp.

Rabbi Baruch Marcus (1870-1961) was a disciple of the grandfather of Kelm, and studied for several years at the Slobodka Yeshiva. where he served as the director of Beit HaMossar in the Struis courtyard in Jerusalemץ In 1913 he participated in the Colonial Campaign together with Rabbi Kook and Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld.  Chief Rabbi of Haifa, and was one of the founders of the Council of Yeshivas in Eretz Israel.
