HULIN PIERRE AUGUSTIN: (1758-1841) French General who decided to take over the Bastille with 75 men and 5 cannons. Hulin was also Commandant of the Headquarters in Paris at the time of the Malet coup attempt. When Hulin refused to accept Malet´s orders, the last shot breaking Hulin´s jaw. An interesting A.L.S., `Hulin, Commandant of the Bastille castle´, two pages, 4to, Bastille, 14th September 1789, to his tailor, in French. The present letter was written two months after the Storming of the Bastille. Hulin states in part `.. I have right now received news from Versailles ordering me to attend with the delegation a meeting for the Bastille affair.´ Further saying `I am right now appointed at the Bastille, as ordered by the Commune and the Headquarters, in my new capacity as Chief Commandant of the Bastille volunteers.´ Hulin concludes kindly asking his correspondent to have his new uniform ready and in time.
