Mostly self-taught, Jacques-Emilie Blanche was a French painter well- known for his successful portraits. Living and working both in Paris and London, he studied a bit with Henri Gervex and got emancipated with his proper style derived from the 18th Century English painters such as Thomas Gainsborough but also from Edouard Manet or John Singer Sargent. Blanche also exhibited his work at the Salon and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts where he became close friends with Marcel Proust who helped him edit several publications. Temporary exportation, a subject to import tax.
