An Italian painter born in Ferrara, de Pisis was born Luigi Filippo Tiber- telli, but took his nickname from his grandfather, Filippo Tibertelli de Pisis. After studying Italian literature in Bologna, in 1920 he moved to Rome, where he had his first solo exhibition, and in 1925 to Paris. He met many important artists of his time, including the de Chirico brothers, Carlo Carra, Giorgio Morandi, Braque, Picasso, Matisse and Derain, and was a part of the Paris School. De Pisis' work was selected for the Venice Bien- nale in 1926, and thereafter he continued to exhibit without interruption. He passed away in Milan on April 2, 1956, and that same year the Venice Biennale chose to hold a retrospective exhibition of his oeuvre. De Pisis was particularly well known for his cityscapes, seascapes and still lifes, which all display an airy quality. This painting is typical of de Pisis' work not only
