18th/19th century Continental silver platter, centered with embosses of mythological and biblical scenes modeled on Byzantine artifacts: on one side, a relief depicting the Rape of Europa, which was probably copied from the Veroli Casket - a 900-1000 AD casket made in Constantinople, featured in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Identification: 216-1865). On the opposite side, a relief depicting scenes from the book of Joshua, which was probably copied from a 10th century Byzantine relief, also made in Constantinople and featured in the Victoria and Albert Museum (identification: 165-1867). The platter stands on four legs, the rim is decorated with neoclassical-style faces and floral motifs. Diameter: 39 cm. Weight: 1226 grams. Worn marks.
