Meggido lion, a statuette created by Bezalel Schatz, "Yaad" workshop for Applied Arts. [Jerusalem, ca. 1950s].
Engraved copper, olive-wood, red stone, wooden base.
Statuette of a roaring lion, inspired by the lion on an ancient Jewish coin found in archaeological excavations in Tel Meggido. The body of the lion is made of engraved copper. Two pieces of olive-wood are inlaid next to its mane; a red stone is inlaid as the lion's eye.
Attached to a wooden base. A printed note is attached to the base (in English) with a short caption about the source of inspiration for the lion and information about its creation: the statuette was commissioned by the State of Israel Bonds organization, and created by the artist Bezalel Schatz, in "Yaad" workshop [founded by Bezalel and Louise Schatz, together with other artists].
Height (incl. base): 16 cm. Width: 21 cm. Minor damages.
