Four Jewish Tokens – Hackney (London) / Glasgow – 18th century
1. Hackney Promissory Token. Hackney (London), 1795.
Obverse: the monogram DAR [David Alves Rebello, a Jew living in Hackney. The token was issued for his private use].
Reverse: the facade of the Hackney church and the inscription "Hackney Church MCCXC". Marked: J.M. This token is considered to be the first private token minted in England. Diameter: 28 mm.
2-3. Two Hackney Promissory Tokens. The two tokens are identical to the first one except for one detail. The hour on the church's clock is 11:35 while the hour on the previous token is 4:05. These tokens were minted later. Diameter: 30 mm.
4. A token issued by a Jewish merchant. London / Glasgow, 1797.
Obverse: weaver at work encircled by the inscription "Success to the Manufacturers of Glasgow". Reverse: St. Paul Cathedral, and the year 1797. Inscribed on the rim of the token: Payable at M.& H. Oppenheims Toy Warehouse London". Considered one of the earliest tokens issued by a Jewish merchant. Diameter: 30 mm.
